Received my first Rock960 Wednesday!

And last night, I started documenting all the steps it took to successfully get ubuntu server 16.04 installed wireless networking up and running and resizing the file system. If there is any interest, I would be happy to finish it up and then start on another tutorial for ROS and tensorflow installation.

Is there any place here for user contributed documentation?

Lets hear it for the vamrs guys! I am really excited about this board!

I believe that you can contribute documentation from here :
https://www.96boards.org/documentation/consumer/rock960/

There is a black button at the bottom right of that page which takes you to GitHub where the docs for all the boards are.
Or hit the ā€œEdit on GitHub buttonā€ further to the right to go to the Rock960 section at GitHub.

There a contribution guide for the docs:

For ā€œbigā€ changes the maintainers recommend pinging them on github Issue
Tracker so you can discuss where best to put it, etc, etc.

Hi, Jason

Nice to meet you here

Contribution to the documents is always welcomed, feel free to send PR, the 96boards team will review it and merge.

For tutorial of ROS/tensorflow, you can start a new .md file under Useful Guides, the community will appreciate your work.

I received my Rock64 yesterday as well! However the install page is broken:

https://www.96boards.ai/sites/production/production.96boards.ai/documentation/consumer/rock960/installation/

I donā€™t even know where to start. I used etcher to flash a uSD with an image from

https://www.96boards.ai/documentation/consumer/rock960/downloads/

I downloaded the all in one image for Debian, extracted, and flashed with Etcher.

Just a black screen on my Rock960 though. Ugh. Terrible out of the box experience.

Hello @tofutodd

Sorry for the inconvenience and broken links on the .ai pages. For the time being, I would suggest using the resources which can be found on 96Boards.org here:

or

on the resources with can be found on the Vamrs site here:

If you have any other questions, feel free to visit us in our IRC channels at #96boards and #OpenHours or drop buy for our weekly open video forum/podcast/livestream - OpenHours. Every Thursday at 4:00p UTC, we will be there interviewing folks in tech and taking questions on anything 96Boards related.

Thanks!

Hi, @tofutodd

The rock960 has android installed in on board eMMC out of the factory. You should have some display from HDMI out of the box.

If you want to try other images, please refer:

Who knows the password of the root user in debian system for rock960?

The root password is random generated, the user rock is super user, you can use sudo su to change to root as rock user

Thank you for reply,I use ā€œsudo suā€ changed to root user, need to provide a password

Itā€™s in the readme of the image tar ballā€¦

default user: rock
default pw: rock

Hi guys, i get to the login screen, but my rock960 is not detecting my USB keyboard!

Same USB keyboard was working prior on Android to flashing to ubuntu.
I flashed to Debian, keyboard still not working. Iā€™m suspecting the image does not come with drivers for mac keyboard? How do I install the drivers without a keyboardā€¦?

edit: got a ā€˜regularā€™ keyboard (ie. non-mac). Works fine in Debian. reinstalling ubuntu now.

Hello @tofutodd

I am afraid I had the same problem: dd Debian to an SD card, then insert SD, then plugā€¦ and just a black screen :scream:

As @hipboi says, Android is already installed in Rock960ā€™s eMMC. I removed SD card and powered on. Android was booted. At least that told me that my board was OK.

I inserted again the SD card. This time, I used a serial cable (see this link) to see booting process. I saw a kernel panic message.

I decided to dd Debian again. After that everything went OK.

Regards!

EDIT: The download link is fixed, leave following as a reference.

We just found a bug in the released image. After dd the image in sdcard, please mount the sdx4 of the sdcard and edit extlinux/extlinux.conf, content as below:

label kernel-4.4
kernel /Image
fdt /rock960-linux.dtb
append earlyprintk console=ttyFIQ0,1500000n8 rw root=/dev/mmcblk1p5 rootfstype=ext4 init=/sbin/init rootwait

change root=/dev/mmcblk1p5 to root=/dev/mmcblk0p5 mmcblk1 is on board eMMC and mmcblk0 is the external uSD card.

The image was primary tested with writing to eMMC. We will fix it next release with UUID to detect eMMC or uSD card.

I donā€™t get it. I didnā€™t ask. Why quote me ?
