User-built space ideas?

I am looking for formulas to build user space applications. For example, there are Debian & ubuntu releases for 96Boards. When I view image files for both ubuntu and Debian, I see user applications that are part of the image.

I can easily find details about how the kernel is built.

But, I can seem to determine how user space applications are built.

Any ideas on where to search this in env build. highly appreciated.

Once you are userspace there are very few per-board customizations: the packages come directly from the distros and the distro documentation becomes the best resource for documentation (there is no point in 96Boards duplicating this stuff).
