In this blog I’d like to cover the hardware and the software specifics of the drone project.

Software

Board Support in zephyrRTOS

  • zephyr BSP:
  • Challenges:
    • No Schematics Available: Gumstix creates board designs in their “drag and drop style” Jepetto platform. The designs go straight to manufacturing through an automated system so schematics are not created and do not exist.
      • Most I/O was guessed
      • Older PX4 commits
      • PCB tracing
      • Trial and error
    • However Gumstix provided as much help as possible.

Firmware Design

  • ESC Initialization
    • The ESC has ONLY ONE INPUT, and that is the PWM signal that comes out of the receiver.
    • The ESC does one of four things with the PWM
      • Goes into startup: This is sort of a motor priming step, any changes in the signal from here on will result in the motor spinning up. This is usually at the lowest throttle position during startup, 1ms PWM.
      • Actually spins up the motors: This is post priming, the ESC drives the motor depending upon the PWM input it receives. Ranges from 1ms being 0% RPM to 2ms being 100% RPM.
      • Setup Mode: This is usually to enter a mode where you can sync the transmitter’s min and max PWM signals to the ESC to make sure that the throttle response is accurate. This is the highest throttle position during startup, 2ms PWM.
      • Makes Beeping noise: ESCs vibrate the motors in order to make beeping noise, this is the ONLY output of the ESC.
  • Communicating with the Controller
    • As if they are physically connected over UART:
    • HC12 provides a completely transparent serial connection
    • A pair of HC12s can be paired simply by having them on the same frequency, baud and channel using simple AT commands
    • Controller simply sends data like
      • Throttle
      • Pitch
      • Roll… etc
    • Drone MCU receives it as if directly receiving bytes over uart.
  • Heavy Lifting done by the MCU
    • Controller only sends as per the user input.
    • MCU calculates per motor throttle by computing user input and MPU input and continuously adjusts
    • Threads and IRQ:
      • controller_input: Functioned called on uart_rx_irq.
        • Writes to maneuver struct
      • mpu_input: Reads data from MPU6050
        • Called by struct sensor_trigger
        • Writes to pos struct
      • rotor_pwm_thread: Continuously updates the pwm signal for each ESC
        • Reads from esc struct
      • fly_thread: Computes user input and MPU data to update pwm values for each ESC
        • Writes to esc struct

Future Plans and Commitments to this Project

  • Remove PWM based ESC, switch over to UAVCAN
    • UAVCAN based ESC ensure Fully autonomous operations
  • GPS and Out Of Sight Control
  • More robust Drone firmware solution, like PX4
    • Including certified hardware
  • Adding CE spec 96Boards
    • Fully autonomous flight
    • 3D Mapping using various cameras and sensors
    • Extremely Low Latency hi res live video stream
